The description of the product by American Fireglass is somewhat misleading. There is a VERY large variation in the sizes of the pieces in the ten pound bag of the 1/2" fire glass. It appears that the pieces result from the fracturing of a "sheet" tempered glass that is 1/2" thick. This results in pieces that are 1/2" in only one dimension. There are pieces as big as 1" x 1" x 1/2" and as small as "slivers" that in only one dimension are 1/2" and as small as 1/8" to 1/4" in the other dimensions. I had wanted fire glass pieces large enough to not fall through or get stuck in the grate slits of my indoor gas fireplace fire pan which was the problem with the fire glass that I was replacing with the 1/2" American Fireglass product. Without either somehow "sifting" the pieces of fire glass in the bag of the American Fireglass to get rid of the too small pieces or somehow modifying the grate openings in the fire pan, the very small pieces of fire glass will fall through or getting stuck in the fire pan grate slits.
