Protect Your Fire Pit Investment
A high-quality fire feature can add a lot to your outdoor entertaining space, and getting the most out of it calls for proper care and maintenance to keep it looking great and working well for years to come. When the weather starts to turn cold, the time comes to pack up your patio furniture and other amenities for the winter, and a fire pit is no different. The list below will walk you through a general end of season maintenance routine for fire pits. Make sure to refer to your owner's manual for any specifics for the model you have.
End-of-Season Checklist:
- Remove debris
- Shut-off the gas supply
- Remove accessories
- Clean exterior surfaces
- Cover
Remove Debris from the Fire Pit
Leaves and other natural debris can leave a nesting place for animals and trap moisture, both of which can be detrimental to your fire feature.
Shut off the Gas Supply
If your fire pit is powered by natural gas, simply turn off the valve. If it uses propane, then shut off the valve, remove the tank and store it outdoors on a level surface away from direct sunlight.
Remove all Accessories
If your fire pit has a windscreen, fire media like lava rocks or fire glass or any other attachment or accessory, these should be removed and stored indoors for the winter.
Clean Exterior Surfaces
Moisture, dirt and other surface blemishes should be wiped clean either with warm, soapy water or a specialized surface cleaner in the case of stainless steel.
Cover Your Fire Pit
The fire pit should be covered completely and firmly. This is best achieved with a cover designed specifically for your model of fire pit if possible, which you can shop for here if you don't have one already. You should also ensure that all vent covers are firmly in place to prevent pests from entering the base.
