Components of a Gas Fire Pit Kit
While the exact selection of parts may vary slightly from brand to brand, the components of a gas fire pit kit will generally fall into three categories: Supply, Control and Installation. We've outlined each of these below to help you understand what you'll be getting when you buy a fire pit kit from us. It should be noted that most fire pit kits don't include the enclosure. This is because those tend to be prohibitively heavy to ship, so you'll need to source those items locally.
Gas Fire Pit Supply Components
These are the components that carry the fire pit fuel from the gas supply to the burner. If you're planning a natural gas fire pit or using a large stationary propane tank, the supply itself should be installed by a licensed gas plumber to the site of your fire pit. If you'll be using a portable propane tank, then the fuel supply only needs to be attached to the tank itself. The supply components you'll receive in a fire pit kit include:
Flex Line
Connects to the gas supply and carries the fuel
Street Elbow
Connects to the flex line, directing the flow upward
Air Mixer and Coupler
(Propane only)
Allows the propane to mix with outside air for clean combustion
Nipple
Completes the connection with the burner
Burner
Fills with fuel and expels it through the burner holes for combustion
Gas Fire Pit Control Components
Once you've got the fuel flowing to the burner, you'll need some way to turn the fire pit on and off. While some of the fire pit kits we offer include advanced electronic control systems, those vary too much between manufacturers to cover in this guide, so we'll be focused on the more straight-forward match light systems we carry. These are the simplest and often most reliable. Control components include:
Key Valve
Attaches to the fuel line and opens and closes to control fuel
Flange
Provides a channel to access the key valve
Flange Extension (Optional)
Extends the flange for fire pits with thicker walls
Key
Actuates the valve to turn the flow on and off
Gas Fire Pit Installation Components
Technically speaking, the components listed above are everything you need to complete a custom gas fire pit (aside from the enclosure itself). However, there are a number of optional installation components that can significantly improve both the performance of your fire pit as well as your experience in installing and maintaining it. These helpful components include:
Vent Kits
Designed to be installed in the enclosure wall and provide air flow under the burner, especially important in propane fire pits to prevent gas pooling
Burner Pan
Sits under the burner and provides a platform for lava rock, fire glass, etc.
Installation Collars
Installed around the inside perimeter of the enclosure for the burner pan to rest on
