Common Questions About Propane Fire Pits

Outdoor propane fire pits are available in a wide variety of styles, which makes them a popular option for backyard fire pits. Whether you’re looking for a small fire pit designed to run off of a 20-pound propane tank, a large fire pit using a 500-gallon household propane tank or something in between, there’s an option for you. Today, we’re answering some of the most common questions we receive about propane fire pits.

Is Propane a Safe Fuel Option for Fire Pits?

Yes, propane fire pits are safe when installed and used in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Since propane gas is heavier than air, pooling gas is often a concern potential buyers may have. However, this problem can be mitigated by ensuring proper ventilation and making sure all gas connections are tight and have been tested for leaks.

As an added safety measure, an increasing number of manufacturers are including a flame sensor on their fire pit systems. This feature prevents pooling by automatically shutting off the gas supply in the event flames are extinguished.

What Kinds of Propane Fire Pits Are Available?

Propane fire pits are available in a wide variety of shapes. We have:

Beyond the standard shapes listed above, there are a lot of customizable options available, and we know it can be confusing to sort through everything on your own. If you need help from an expert, contact us and a member of our team can help guide you through the shopping process.

Can I Use a Standard Grill Tank to Fuel a Fire Pit?

Yes, but with some caveats. Most propane grills are designed to work with a 20-pound propane tank. These tanks can be used with propane fire pit burners rated for up to 125,000 BTU. For reference, this would be an 18-Inch Spotix Match Lit Penta Kit.

If you attempt to use a 20-pound propane tank with a burner designed with greater BTU requirements, you’ll be left with a suboptimal flame. In addition to BTU, you’ll also want to make sure your supply pressure is between eight and 11 inches of water column.
